Sen. Arley Gill in full swing
St. George’s, August 16, 2010 (GIS) –
Junior Culture Minister, Senator Arley Gill, has said that there are many positives from the just-concluded carnival celebrations, and is encouraging greater attempts to leverage the outstanding aspects of the national festival.

He is appealing to all interest groups, including the Grenada Carnival Committee, Grenada Steelbands’ Association, Grenada Mas Bands’ Association and calypsonians, to meet quickly to analyse areas of strengths and weaknesses and to prepare future plans. They are also being invited to share their views on the way forward at an upcoming national carnival symposium.

“All the stakeholders of Spicemas must be commended for another sterling effort and for the thrill and entertainment of the season,’’ Sen. Gill said. “They certainly made participating and spectating at carnival worth the while for thousands of Grenadians and visitors.’’

The major carnival winners included Otis, who captured both the Soca Monarch and Road March titles with “Tornado.’’

IAN FRANCIS WRITES....

WE NEED TO REBRAND AND RESTRUCTURE THE CARICOM SECRETARIAT

The decision by Dr. Carrington, Secretary General of the Caricom Secretariat to demit office at the end of 2010 is extremely good news for regional governments. The failed July deliberations in Montego Bay could have deeply contributed to Carrington’s decision. The apparent deficiency of Caribbean Heads to understand their role and responsibility in managing the day to day affairs of the Secretariat was a great embarrassment to many regional observers. It is hoped that the upcoming meeting on Governance to be held in Grenada later this month under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Golding will set new strategic directions on the management of the Secretariat.

By ARNOLD A. AUGUSTE, Publisher/Editor

Then, that was a different kind of party; that was when the true West Indians (and those with a true West Indian spirit) really showed how to play mas'.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR CARNIVAL?

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD

What is happening to our Carnival? What went down this year as Spice Mas  has left many people wondering if Grenada’s Carnival has become a Carnival that is failing very fast.

The organization of this year’s Carnival was appalling, and please don’t judge the success of Soca Monarch as Carnival. Soca concerts can happen anytime of the year.  I am talking about the overall, indigenous festival that was magnificent in the olden days.
