RANDY LEWIS SCORES
London, August 3, 2007 -- Randy Lewis set a new national record in the men's triple jump as he placed third at the Norwich Union Super Grand Prix in London today. He improved on his previous best of 17.34m, as he finished with 17.43m.
American Aarik Wilson won the event with 17.58m, followed by Leevan Sands of the Bahamas (17.55). This is gratifying for Lewis who missed out on medalling at the just concluded 15th Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
While jumping in the rain last Saturday he slid and tore his shoes in the process. It affected his attempts since the rainy conditions didn't favour him and others as officials refused to halt the jumping.
Meanwhile, Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell won the men's and women's 200m respectively. Bolt posted an impressive 20.06 seconds ahead of Americans Wallace Spearmon (20.11) and Joshua Johnson (20.48 ) while Campbell took the top spot over Torri Edwards of the United States and Kim Gevaert of Belgium.
Novlene Williams, also of Jamaica, was third in the women's 400m in a time of 50.91 seconds.
