STAR-STUDDED GOSPEL CONCERT TO MARK INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
St. George, February 26, 2008 -- Several top local and regional gospel performers, including Jamaican recording artistes Papa San and Carlene Davis, will be showcased at a major International Women's Day (IWD) event in Gouyave next month.
Papa San and Carlene Davis will be joined by Grenadians such as Dr.
Linda Waldron, Richard Simon and Shamar at the free Gospel Concert,
which is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, at Cuthbert Peters
Park. The keynote speaker will be Kerryann Ifill, a blind female
politician who is the Deputy Speaker of the Barbados Senate.
The concert is being organized by women affiliated with the main
Opposition National Democratic Congress. Party executive member,
Glynis Roberts, says the International Women's Day event is aimed at
bringing families together and is open to all Grenadians.
"We believe, as women of the NDC, that the time has come for us to
bring back that sort of family life to our country,'' said Roberts, who
is Treasurer of the National Democratic Congress. She is also MP for
St. George South.
"We want people to come and be blessed in the deliveries that will
happen on the evening of March 9. I want to appeal to everyone to put
aside that day to go to Gouyave to reminisce and consider. We are in
the Lenten season, which is supposed to be a holy season for the
country.''
Grenadians, including politicians, can solve the problems besetting the
nation only by working together, added Roberts. She described the IWD
concert on March 9 as providing an opportunity for Grenadians "to
reflect and analyse where we are and see how we can chart a more
peaceful course forward.''
The Opposition MP said: "The only way we can solve problems is by
working together. And we, as leaders, should be cognizant of the fact
that we will differ, particularly as politicians. But if we are
leaders and all we're talking about is like we're fighting, the only
thing that will filter down to our people is that they need to fight.
We shouldn't be creating that sense of animosity and having our people
feeling that we are fighting.''
