SAVE OUR LAGOON PARK!!
NO TO ANY BUILDING ON THE LAGOON PARK

St. George, April 24, 2008 -- The grouping, Citizens in Defence of Grenada’s Lands and Heritage,  is pleased that the Grenada Trade Union Council has embraced its  request to be part of the 2008 Annual May Day Celebrations.  The group will march under the banner – Save Our Lagoon Park!!  No to any Building on the Lagoon Park!!

The group is fundamentally opposed to the proposals by the Port Louis development to reclaim land and erect cottages and commercial buildings along the Lagoon Road, leaving only “windows to the sea’” for the general public.  These actions will:

•    Destroy the existing Lagoon Park, the only remaining public green space in the town of St. George’s available for the recreation and enjoyment of the general public.
•    It will destroy the breath-taking vista of the sea view which is our right to enjoy.
•    Place the Lagoon area at greater risk from flooding during storm surges and other extreme events like hurricanes and from sea level rise – both of which are the expected results of climate change impact.  It is predicted that extreme events will be more frequent.  It is therefore imperative that Grenada takes a long term view.

The representatives of Camper and Nicholson, the new owners of the marina, have publicly state that they have the right to reclaim land and build along the Lagoon.   They intend to pursue these plans and to build cottages and marina related complexes on the Lagoon Park area.

We, the people of Grenada, need to send a clear message to the developers, our representatives, our decision – makers and regulatory authorities.  We  will not continue to stand idly by and look at reclamation and the destruction of the Lagoon Park.

IT IS TIME FOR ACTION!  Citizens in Defence of Grenada’s Lands and Heritage invites the general public to part of the march with the Grenada Trade Union Council on May Day.

The march begins at Butler House Gap, Belmont from 9.30 a.m. and ends with a rally at the Tanteen Recreation Ground.

BE PART OF THIS MARCH!!   BE PART OF THIS STRUGGLE.!!

BRING YOUR PLACARDS!!  BRING YOUR BANNERS!!

COME AND BE COUNTED!!  LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD!!
