Jennifer Hosten, John Benjamin, Dorothy Chichester (Benjamin's sister)
St. George, April 30, 2008 -- Well known Grenadian Artist, John Benjamin, was the recipient on April 29 of a very specially autographed copy Beyond Miss World, the autobiography of former Miss World, Jennifer Hosten.
The book presentation took Place at Chichester’s Nursing Home in
Springs, St. George, where Mr. Benjamin is a resident. “I have admired
John Benjamin and his work for many years. As Grenada’s High
Commissioner to Canada in the late 1970s, I invited him to visit Canada
in order to highlight his work. He was a tremendous hit there and I
have been honoured to be his friend ever since. He is written about in
the book and I particularly wanted him to know that he is not
forgotten,” said Mrs. Hosten.
John Benjamin is one of Grenada’s best known and internationally
decorated artists. He has been honoured by several countries including
Switzerland and Germany.
It was Mr. Benjamin’s picture of the Nutmeg Princess that was the
inspiration for the National costume of Jennifer Hosten when she
represented Grenada in 1970 at the Miss World Contest. Another one of
his pictures titled, “Dance for Mama and Papa” was commissioned by
UNICEF for the International Year of the Child and was also made into a
postage stamp to celebrate that auspicious occasion.
