COMMISSIONER GRAVELY CONCERNED ABOUT SPATE OF CRIME
SEVERAL SENSITIVE ISSUES DISCUSSED
St. George, May 27, 2008 -- Commissioner of Police, Winston James, has expressed deep concern about the wave of crime which has plagued Grenada in the first five months of the year.
Already in 2008, the State has recorded nine murders and one manslaughter, in contrast to eleven murders in 2007. This is an unprecedented record which has prompted the Royal Grenada Police Force to step up patrols by both uniformed and plain clothed officers along with unannounced stops and searches.
The Government of Grenada has approved a request by the Commissioner for an additional 164 officers, and a recruitment drive is already underway.
At Tuesday's media conference, Commissioner James and other members of the Royal Grenada Police Force's hierarchy also addressed a number of other issues surrounding the force.
