LONDON, UK, May 22, 2009 - Former sports journalist Glen Hankey on Friday graduated from Phase 1 training in the British army.

Private Hankey, who previously worked at the Grenada Broadcasting Network, successfully completed 14 weeks of training at the Army Training Centre (ATC) in Pirbright, Surrey. He was attached to Morley's troop in the 96th Squadron.

Hankey’s Phase 1 training included Firing the 5.56mm rifle; demonstrating aerobic fitness and muscular endurance; treating battlefield casualties; operating in a nuclear, biological and chemical environment; employing basic fieldcraft skills; navigating across country; employing security measures; maintaining personal health, hygiene and welfare; developing personal attributes vital to operations; displaying qualities of a British soldier; maintaining personal finances; recognising the structure of the British army and performing drills.

He will now begin the 13-week Phase 2 training at Larkhill Training Centre as an AS90 Gunner Operator.
