“SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS” WORKSHOP

St. George’s, June 9, 2009 -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) along with the Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development has launched a series of Inclusive Education Workshops targeted at Special Education Needs Teachers (SENT) in Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

The workshops, which are coordinated by the Special Education Desk at the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, are aimed at equipping Special Education Needs Teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the special needs of their students; providing the techniques for teachers to make proper assessments of their students; and challenging them to play a positive role in creating a more inclusive educational environment and society.

The facilitators for the sessions are Dr. Avril Daley from Jamaica (Assessments), Mrs. Maudlyn James (Inclusive Education) and Ms. Kathy Jackson (Speech and Language Therapy).

The programme is geared at ensuring the implementation of the United Nations mandate of “Education for All” by 2015.

In addition to this programme, the Grenada UNESCO office has been involved with a number of other activities including the recently concluded Caribbean Media and Communications Conference, the Caribbean Justice System Workshop, Grenada’s celebration of the International Year of Astronomy and Emotional Coping Skills Workshops for Primary and Secondary School Teachers on the island.
