Bridgetown, June 26, 2009 -- A FERRY SERVICE covering Barbados, Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines should be operational within the next two months.
Chief executive officer of Grenada's BEDY Ocean Line, Benjamin Ross,
told the WEEKEND NATION in a telephone interview this week from his
base in the Spice Isle that a vessel capable of carrying 260 people
would be used twice weekly on Tuesday and Friday to and from Barbados.
He said it would depart Grenada at 6 a.m., arrive in St Vincent at 9
a.m., leave an hour later and arrive in Barbados at 2 p.m. The ferry
would then leave at 3 p.m. and arrive in St Vincent and the Grenadines
at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.
On Fridays the ferry would depart St Vincent at 6 a.m., arrive in
Barbados at 9 a.m., spend one hour and reach St Vincent at 2 p.m. The
vessel then leaves there at 3 p.m. with a 6 p.m. arrival in Grenada.
Ross said passengers would benefit from cheaper prices when compared to
airline travel. He added an advertising campaign on the ferry service
would soon be launched through travel agents Going Places.
Ross said last month that passengers would have no weight restriction,
while special requirements would be put in place for those people
wanting to transport large amounts of cargo.
He explained business was aimed at satisfying the needs of lower income
groups, service clubs and church organisations, among others.
Ross said the initiative provided for those travelling to events like
cricket, carnival, Crop-Over, jazz festivals and comedy shows.
