CITIZENS IN DEFENSE OF GRENADA'S LANDS AND HERITAGE
VS
CAMPER NICHOLSONS
St. George's, June 29, 2009 -- Following a request by the Government of Grenada and Camper Nicholsons to the fishermen based along the shores of the Lagoon to move about 150 feet from their present location, another squabble appears to be in the making.
The move was requested in order to facilitate the storage of heavy equipment by the developer, Camper and Nicholsons, so that construction could begin on 120 additional berths at the new marina now being built at the Port Louis site. At a media conference on Thursday, the fishermen made it quite clear that they had no intentions of moving, although the land is currently owned by C & N.
The fishermen appear concerned about C & N intentions to fence the area, despite assurances by the marina's manager, Clyde Rawls that such a procedure is routine at construction sites.
The "Pressure Group," Citizens in Defense of Grenada's Lands and Heritage took the opportunity to raise concerns of their own about the developer's credibility since C & N had informed the public several months ago that they were seeking the Blue Flag award which is awarded to beaches and marinas meeting specific standards. However, when the pressure group learned about this move, they contacted the International Blue Flag Co-ordination Foundation for Environment Education; only to learn that they were not even aware of Camper and Nicholson's interest in receiving the award.
Spokesperson for Citizens in Defense of Grenada's Lands and Heritage, Sandra Ferguson, has interpreted this as bringing the developer's credibility into question.
