BRITISH CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS EXTENDED FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2010-2011

Bridgetown, November 24, 2009 --The deadline for applying to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Chevening Scholarship scheme has been extended to 31 December 2009.

Would-be postgraduate students from Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean who are looking for funding for their courses of study have an extra month in which they can make applications.

The Chevening Scholarship Scheme is a prestigious international award given for one year of postgraduate study (fees, accommodation and a stipend) at institutions in the UK.  Awards can be given for studies in any field, and preference is given to students who aim to return to their home country, which then benefits from the newly acquired skills, knowledge and expertise.  

Successful candidates are likely to be already established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field.   Past scholars from Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean have included Prime Ministers and other government ministers and leading figures from both public and private sectors.

Current Chevening Scholars come from Grenada and Barbados.  From Grenada, Nicole Garraway is  studying International Trade Law at Newcastle University, and from Barbados, Rachel Worrell is studying Coastal Engineering at Plymouth University and Dawn Grosvenor-Blackman is a Glaucoma Fellow at the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, attached to the University of London.
