Hillsborough, Carriacou, March 8th, 2010- The Division of Agriculture in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs is embarking on a programme which will see water wells and ponds being cleaned.
 Brunswick Pond before cleaning
After the successful cleaning of the Belair and Brunswick Ponds, the
Agriculture Division is starting with the wells located at L’Esterre
and Harvey Vale. According to data collected by the division there are
over twenty wells on the island, all of which will be cleaned. The
wells are utilised for both domestic water use, as well as for
construction purposes.
 Brunswick Pond after cleaning
Carriacou, like Grenada and other Caribbean countries, is battling a
drought that has forced the implementation of measures to deal with a
severe water shortage. The cleaning of wells and ponds, to make them usable, is one of the
measures adopted by the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique
Affairs, led by Senator the Hon. George Prime.
The island has also had to barge in over 300,000 gallons of water from
Grenada, and the Agriculture Division has had to supply water to
farmers.
Head of the Division, Benson Patrice, has appealed to farmers and
community members to support all the measures being taken to conserve
water and to use water wisely.
