ISSUES AND CONCERNS TO BE ADDRESSED DURING AWARDS CEREMONY

St. George, March 11, 2010 -- Grenada’s Attorney General Mr. Rohan Phillip will deliver the feature address at the  Grenada Human Rights Organization Inc Awards and Appreciation ceremony on Saturday March 13th 2010 at the Grenada Boy’s Secondary School (GBSS) auditorium.

Mr. Phillip is expected to address growing human rights concerns in Grenada and its regional and international obligations and commitments to the promotion and protection of human rights for Grenadians at home and outside of Grenada.

The theme for Saturday’s event is: “Knowing your rights is your civic responsibility”

The Human Rights Awards ceremony will be followed by a “Concert” featuring Wizard, poems by Francess Fletcher and Natalie Cherman, Patrick Delves, African Teller, drumming by Paul ‘Pablo’ Sylvester and other musical packages. An interlude of ‘conscious music’ begins the evening’s activities  6:00 PM.

Human Rights Awards will be presented to Elwin McQuilkin (Black Wizard) – one of Grenada’s most accomplished calysonoians; and attorney-at-law Anslem Clouden – a leading human rights advocate and defense attorney; Certificate of Appreciation will be presented to local human rights activists: Ms Rachael Charles – for her contribution to HIV AIDS awareness and human rights promotion and protection; Mrs. Christine Braithwaite – for her services and leadership to Amnesty International – Grenada and the region; Mr.  Milton Coy – for his activism and leadership in human rights education (locally and regionally); Dr. Winston Thomas; Violet Bishop; Desmond Andrew and Mrs. Alva Lawrence for their contribution, promotion and support for human rights; Certificate of Recognition will be presented to Bishop’s College in Carriacou, Westerhall Secondary School, Happy Hill Secondary School, New Life Organisation (NEWLO) and TAMCC (St. Patrick’s)

A Special Human Rights Tribute will also be given to Grenada’s Prime Minister – Hon Tillman Thomas, for his exemplary role in championing human rights causes here in Grenada and the region.

A special report by Mr. John Rollow regarding his human right experience is also scheduled.
 
There will be solidarity messages and remarks from other human rights agencies and organizations including GNOW, Ministry of Social Development, Grenada Trade Union Council and other civil society organizations – among others. There will also be a report on human rights in Grenada and the work of the Grenada Human Rights Organisation Inc during the past decade, including a tribute to GHRO Inc by Joseph Carter
