PRIME MINISTER MITCHELL MEETS WITH CANADA’S PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY AND HIGH COMMISSIONER OF CANADA TO BARBADOS AND EASTERN CARIBBEAN
Prime Minister Keith Mitchell earlier today met with Canada’s Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development, and former Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Celina Caesar-Chavannes.
Canada’s High Commissioner based in Barbados, Marie Legault also accompanied the Parliamentary Secretary who is on a tour of duty to Jamaica, Barbados and Grenada.
Prime Minister Mitchell began the meeting by expressing, on behalf of the Government of Grenada, gratitude to the Government of Canada for consistent and ardent support given to Grenada during the Structural Adjustment Programme of the last three years.
He reminded the Canadians that on a personal level, he has always been grateful to the Government of Canada, because it is through their generosity that he received a scholarship in the 1970’s to study abroad and become who he is today.
Prime Minister stressed that he looks forward to the historically strong working relationship between the Governments of Grenada and Canada. Having met several Canadian Prime Ministers over the years, including current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister Mitchell reiterated that PM Trudeau has an open invitation to Grenada, the heritage country of Parliamentary Secretary Caesar-Chavannes and retired Canadian MP, Honourable Jean Augustine.
Caesar-Chavannes, for her part, expressed firstly, Prime Minister Trudeau’s regret at not being able to attend the recently concluded CARICOM Heads of Government Conference here in Grenada, to which he was a specially invited guest. PM Trudeau at the time was traveling to participate in the G20 summit. She also expressed congratulations to Prime Minister Mitchell and Grenada for hosting a successful CARICOM meeting, stating that she was able to watch some of the opening ceremony.
