The public signing ceremony of the Code of Political Conduct to Guide the General Election Campaign 2017/2018 is set take place on Monday, November 6th, 2017 at 2.00 p.m. at the Public Workers Union Conference Rm. Invitations have been dispatched to thirteen (13) political parties and independent candidates.
The Code was developed through a consultative process in which a diverse group of civil society organisations participated. The process was led by a Steering Committee, chaired by Ms. Judy Williams of the Grouping of Civil Society Organisations. Other organisations represented on the Steering Committee are the Conference of Churches Grenada, the Grenada Trade Union Council, the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Grenada Bar Association.
The Code of Political Conduct sets out guidelines for the political campaign to which candidates are being requested to voluntarily adhere. Its intent is to:
- Facilitate the accountability of those persons putting themselves up for office
- Encourage persons putting themselves up for office to address issues of concern to the electorate and pertinent to the development of the country.
- Mobilize the participation of the civil society and public at large in the process of general elections
The Code makes provisions for a Watch Dog Committee which will liaise with the general public to monitor candidates’ adherence to the guidelines set out in the Code.
Members of the public are invited to witness the signing ceremony.
The Code of Political Conduct was first initiated for the January 1999 general elections.
