STATEMENT FROM PRIME MINISTER ON THE PASSING OF MRS. CYNTHIA GAIRY

Written by on January 31, 2018

On behalf of the Government and People of Grenada, I extend condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Cynthia Gairy, wife of Grenada’s first Prime Minister and Father of Independence, the late Sir Eric Mathew Gairy.

We are deeply saddened by her passing on Monday night in the US city of Atlanta.

Mrs. Gairy, was not only the wife of our first Prime Minister but also a Member of Parliament, having represented St. David.

As a country, we are forever grateful to the Gairy family for their sacrifices and stewardship.

As one people, we mourn the passing of Mrs. Gairy, but we do so with gratitude by recalling her life and contribution to this Nation.

May the soul of Cynthia Gairy rest in perfect peace.

We could have done more, whether in this speech from the PM or from a journalistic perspective, to highlight the contribution of Lady Gairy, considering the era in which she did what she did and implications for national development and social transformation in contemporary Grenada. This lady was ahead of her time.
