Carifta 2018 Medalists

At the end of the 3rd of 4 days of the Carifta Aquatic Championship at the National Aquatic Centre in Kingston Jamaica Grenada’s swimmers continue to propel our National swimming performances to a higher level.  Over the 3 days of swimming the 10-member team managed to secure 24 final event appearances at the Carifta Championship.

On Day 1 of the championship, Parshawn Haynes swimming the 50m backstroke in the boys’ 11-12 age group, with a personal best time of 32.13 seconds, secured a bronze medal earning him his moment of glory on the podium.  Grenada’s second medal was secured by Jenebi Benoit swimming in the boys 13-14 100m butterfly with a time 1.01:06.  This time secured a bronze medal placement in his age group.

Day 2 continued with team Grenada securing another 9 spots in the finals of the second day of the competition.  Gabrielle Hyson emerged as the bronze medal winner in the girls 11-12 400m Individual Medley with a personal best time of 5.46:46.  Jenebi Benoit, in the boys’ 50m back placed 4th with a personal best performance missing the podium by .05 second with a time of 27.34.  Parshawn Haynes also had a personal best performance placing 5th in the boys 50m fly with a time of 29.15.

On day 3, team Grenada continued to shine and secured another 7 final appearances by Gabrielle Hyson, Anaika Charles, Meeka Ollivierre, Delron Felix, Ariann Clouden and Jenebi Benoit as an alternate.

Anaika Charles emerged with the bronze medal in the girls 11-12 50m breaststroke in a time of 36.77.  Day 3 medal count was crowned with the silver medal placement of Gabrielle Hyson who swam in a battle to the finish with a personal best time of 2.43:14 in the 200m Butterfly.

Grenada’s swim team’s exemplary performance is Grenada’s best CARIFTA showing to date as they have secured final placements in most of their events.  At the end of Day 3 with only one final day of competition remaining, the 10-member team has secured a total of 5 medals from 4 swimmers.   The team is highly motivated going into the fourth and final day of competition and more personal best performances are expected to emerge.
