At Saturday’s consultation, the issue regarding sea transportation to and from Carriacou and Petite Martinique was paramount in the minds of residents on the island wanting to access adult and higher educational services on evenings.

As it currently stands, the last scheduled ferry service departs Windward at around 5:00 pm for Petite Martinique, effectively rendering the island inaccessible thereafter, except for small private speed boats. The existing condition impedes the island’s development as most evening classes at the T.A Marryshow Community College in Carriacou end after 6:30 pm. If Petite Martiniquans are to take advantage of the available evening educational opportunities it will mean either over-nighting in Carriacou at their own expense or hiring private transportation to get home after sunset which in itself is relatively expensive and unsafe.

In an effort to bring conveniences and opportunities to the residents of Petite Martinique, I’m committed through government to negotiate an additional scheduled evening ferry service leaving Carriacou at 7:00 pm that is expected to be completely government sponsored. This service will open avenues to islanders who want to take advantage of educational opportunities and/or conduct business in Carriacou after 4:00 pm.

I’m also committed to undertaking upgrade work on the Windward jetty area to accommodate the night commuters.
