10 -10-10: 10th Day of the 10th Month, 10.00 am; a perfect line up of numbers fittingly saw the official launch of the Waggy T’s Super Knockout Tournament 2017, by Megaforce Promotions. And it seems that the “Sport–tainment” event of the region is off to an equally perfect start, with an increase in participants, bringing the number of competing teams to a record 30.

Carib, FLOW Communications and Guardian General Insurance (OECS) Ltd, were present at the packed launch event, completing the line-up of the tournaments Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsors. Their contribution, along with approximately 20 other sponsors, has placed the event in a position to offer approximately $130,000 in prizes.

In his address, Managing Director of Guardian General (OECS) Ltd, Ronald Hughes, congratulated Wayne Redhead and his team for implementing the novel idea of coupling football with entertainment, which has worked tremendously well. “We at Guardian General (OECS) Ltd, have watched the development and interest this tournament has generated throughout the nation, with pride. As is the case with so many others we are very happy to be associated with an event which focuses on the youth of the nation and provides a very positive channel in which to direct their time and energy,” he said.  Guardian General, which is the silver sponsor for the event, has contributed $10, 000.00 to the tournament.

The other sponsors present endorsed Hughes’ comments, speaking to the social development benefits, the increased levels of participation and the quality of both the event and the players — even classifying this event as the country’s biggest entertainment event, outside of Spicemas Carnival!

Flow Communications, now in its second year of sponsorship, committed to a further three years as a Gold sponsor; and Platinum sponsor Carib, who has supported the event since its inception, gave a verbal commitment to supporting the project for the years ahead.

Coordinator of the event, Wayne ‘ Waggy T’ Redhead thanked everyone who has made it possible to conceptualize and grow this premier event. He praised the event’s many sponsors for their financial support.  “Soccer is a sport that combines so many positives into one combined activity.  It is through the sponsorship of corporate Grenada that this tournament can continue to grow from strength to strength,” he said.  “The key to the success of this event is not necessarily the skill of the teams, but their keenness to play well and compete fairly.  From my perspective, that is actually the most significant attribute they can bring to the field. We are looking forward to an extremely successful knock-out event and wish all participating teams the very best of luck.”

Now in its ninth year, the Waggy T Super Knockout Football Tournament and Megaforce Promotions have upheld their self-imposed mandate to allow as many residents and visitors as possible to be able to attend the events, by keeping ticket prices at a record $30.00 for the stand and $20.00 for the bleachers.

They invite the nation to come out in their numbers and support the event(s) which will also be welcoming a stellar line-up of regional artistes such as; Alison Hinds of Barbados, Vershon and Spice from Jamaica, Ravi B with the band Karma from Trinidad, and local artistes Lavaman, Boyzie, Dash, Wuss Ways, Shortpree, Terra Kid and many more.

The event, which is endorsed by the Ministry of Youth, and regulated by the Grenada Football Association, is carded for Saturday 21st October, at the National Stadium.
